Chatham – A Town With a Long History of Great Food & Great Restaurants

The location of modern-day Chatham has long been inhabited by humans. Originally a small village known as John Day’s Bridge (after the creator of a physical bridge over the Passaic), the residents agreed on an official name in 1773. They selected Chatham after Sir William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, a British Parliament member who was sympathetic to colonists’ rights. The area was heavily involved in the Revolutionary War, with troop movement and skirmishes taking place as the colonists defended the river crossing. The nearby Watchung Mountains were also an important feature that acted as a barrier and scouting overlook.

Afterwards, the area remained a popular travel throughway to the west and commuter town. Industry and tourism thrived as guests were attracted towards “fresh mountain air.” With the addition of the Morris and Essex Railroad, commuters could live in Chatham and travel to New York. Today, Chatham still celebrates their history with famed annual events like the Fishawack Festival and Kelley’s Pond Fishing Derby. Visitors today can partake of the Farmer’s Market, enjoy various hiking trails, and see many historical houses.
